How to get in the vacation mindset without traveling

When most people think of the word ‘vacation’, taking time off work and flying somewhere sunny usually comes to mind. Vacation often allows you to unwind and relax.

Barb and I run Yoga Vacations. We lead fun and explorative retreat experiences embracing the following values: open, friendly, safe space, non-denominational, non-judgemental, eco and veggie-friendly, and we encourage freedom of expression.

We went to South America recently! While booking our trip I realized that I didn’t have to wait until the vacation to feel the feelings of fun and freedom that travel brings me.

Vacation is a mindset.

Here’s four ways you can take time out for yourself for a mini vacation today:

#1 Rest

Whether that means taking a nap or curling up on your sofa with a good book and a cup of tea, take time out for yourself to relax. If you only have time to read while on vacation and it’s something you love to do, then it’s time to start cutting out non-essential activities to make more time for yourself.

#2 Listen to music

Have a favourite song that reminds you of good times? Play it then dance and sing your heart out.

#3 Visualization

If you already have a planned vacation, you can visualize yourself already there to bring about feelings of excitement and anticipation. Even if you don’t have a vacation coming up, you can still have fun fantasizing about your dream vacation.

#4 Go on a local adventure

When was the last time you played tourist in your own town? Imagine you have guests coming to visit. Where would you take them? Get outside and see something new in your town or city. Go to a restaurant or coffee shop that you have never been to. Talk to people that you don’t know and have fun!

Give yourself a break and take a mini-vacation today without spending any money.
